About Dr. Charles Schnee
Charles L. Schnee, MD, FACS, is originally from Los Angeles, California and graduated with Highest Honors from the University of California, Berkeley. He subsequently attended Tufts University School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, awarded to the top of the graduating class. Dr. Schnee completed an internship and neurosurgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia, as well as a Spine Surgery fellowship at the University of Texas, Houston. Dr Schnee is Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He has performed over 10,000 spinal and brain operations in 30 years of training and practice experience. After successfully practicing in Los Angeles, Dr. Schnee and his family moved to Maryland in 2006 in order to be closer to family. Dr. Schnee served as the Director of Spinal Surgery, Department of Neurosurgery, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 2006-2009. Dr. Schnee then joined a longstanding private practice with Dr. Robert Hennessy, and the late Dr. Henry Shuey, as President of Hennessy, Shuey, and Schnee, Chartered. Dr. Schnee has served as Section Chief, Neurosurgery, at Ascension St Agnes Medical Center since 2014, and as Chief Medical Officer, Maryland Specialty Surgery Center, since 2012. Dr. Schnee is currently President of the Maryland Neurosurgical Society. Dr Schnee is excited to join the MedStar Medical Group and MedStar Neurosurgery as a Senior Partner. Dr. Schnee has extensive experience in spinal disorders, trauma, and tumors of the nervous system. He also provides expertise for many brain disorders. Dr. Schnee often sees patients that are considered challenging or high risk for other surgeons. Referrals frequently come from former patients, and he routinely operates on fellow physicians and their families. Dr. Schnee was invited to the Food and Drug Administration Panel on Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Devices, which determines safety and application for all surgical spinal devices prior to introduction into the U.S. Market. He evaluated spinal implant devices as a consultant, both before and after their introduction to the U.S. market. He is frequently invited to speak on neurosurgical and spinal topics to nursing and medical staff, and taught surgical technique for motion preservation and minimally invasive surgery to practicing surgeons at national courses. Dr. Schnee is married. He and his wife have three children who all attended school in Baltimore. He is very active in community services, schools, and religious organizations.
